How We Inspect Every Mac Before It Ships: The MacPro-LA 50-Point Process

Buying a refurbished Mac is a smart move. You get the same Apple hardware at a fraction of the price. But we understand the hesitation: How do I know it's actually in good shape?

That's a fair question, and we think you deserve a straight answer. So here's exactly what happens to every Mac before it leaves our facility.


We Treat Every Device as Our Own

At MacPro-LA, we don't just wipe a machine and ship it. Every device goes through a 50-point inspection carried out by our in-house technicians. Any Mac that doesn't pass all 50 checks is either repaired using genuine Apple parts or pulled from inventory entirely. It doesn't get sold.

Here's a full walkthrough of what we look at.


1. Aesthetic Inspection (Points 1–10)

Before we touch the internals, we do a thorough physical inspection of the enclosure. We're checking for:

  • Physical damage to the enclosure
  • Screen scratches or cracks
  • Dents or dings
  • Loose or missing screws
  • Keyboard and trackpad surface wear
  • Port cleanliness and condition
  • Speaker grille blockages
  • Interior cleanliness (where accessible)
  • Signs of liquid contact — we check the internal Liquid Contact Indicators (LCI)

If a machine shows signs of liquid damage, it doesn't move forward. Full stop.


2. Display and Video (Points 11–17)

The display is one of the most important parts of any Mac. We run a full visual diagnostic that covers:

  • Dead or stuck pixels
  • Screen delamination (the "Staingate" issue found on older Retina models)
  • Backlight consistency — we check for the "stage light" effect caused by failing display cables
  • Proper brightness control
  • True Tone functionality (where applicable)
  • Webcam operation and image clarity
  • Discrete GPU performance (on models with dedicated graphics)

3. Hardware and Ports (Points 18–27)

Every port gets tested. Every one. That includes:

  • All USB and Thunderbolt ports
  • Charging port and MagSafe functionality
  • Headphone jack
  • SD card slot and HDMI port (where applicable)
  • Wi-Fi signal strength and connectivity
  • Bluetooth pairing and range
  • Internal speakers — we listen for distortion or popping
  • Internal microphone recording quality
  • Fan operation and noise levels

4. Input Devices (Points 28–33)

We test every single key on the keyboard for responsiveness, plus keyboard backlight uniformity. On the trackpad, we verify click feel, multi-touch gestures, and Force Touch. Touch ID, Touch Bar (on applicable models) — all tested.


5. Battery and Power (Points 34–38)

Battery health is one of the top concerns for refurbished laptop buyers, and rightly so. We check:

  • Battery cycle count
  • Battery health percentage
  • Physical battery condition — any swelling or deformity is an automatic disqualifier
  • Proper charging rate
  • Power adapter integrity

We don't hide battery cycle counts. If you want to know the cycle count on a specific machine, just ask us.


6. Storage and Memory (Points 39–41)

We run diagnostics on both the SSD and RAM:

  • SSD health and S.M.A.R.T. status — this tells us if the drive is showing early signs of failure
  • RAM error testing via MemTest
  • Proper storage capacity reporting

7. System and Software (Points 42–50)

This is where we make sure the Mac is completely clean and ready for you — no surprises, no leftover data, no locks:

  • Check for EFI or Firmware passwords
  • Check for MDM or Remote Management profiles (common on corporate machines)
  • Check for Find My Mac activation lock
  • Full factory reset and fresh macOS installation
  • System sensor checks — thermal, voltage, and more
  • Sleep/Wake functionality
  • Lid sensor (Clamshell mode)
  • Logic board inspection for evidence of prior repairs
  • Final stress test and performance benchmark

That last point matters. We run a full performance benchmark on every machine. If it doesn't perform the way it should, it doesn't ship.


What Happens If Something Fails?

If a Mac fails any of the 50 points, it goes one of two directions: it gets repaired using genuine Apple parts and re-inspected from scratch, or it gets pulled from inventory. There's no middle ground. We don't discount our way around problems — we fix them or we don't sell the machine.

Every Mac we sell comes with a 1-year warranty. If something goes wrong within that window, we take care of it. The inspection process is our first line of defense — the warranty is your safety net if anything unexpected comes up after you've been using it.
