Buying a refurbished Mac is a smart move. But we understand the hesitation: How do you know it's actually been checked? Who looked at it, and how thoroughly? What happens if something goes wrong?
At MacPro-LA, we built our 50-point inspection process to answer exactly those questions. Every Mac that leaves our facility has been through a structured, documented evaluation by our in-house technicians. Here's what that actually looks like.
Why a Formal Inspection Process Matters
Not all refurbished Macs are equal. Some sellers do a quick wipe and relist. We don't. Our process was designed around one question: would we be comfortable using this machine ourselves? If the answer is no, it doesn't ship.
The 50-point inspection covers six core areas. Here's what we check in each.
1. External Hardware and Condition
Before we touch the internals, we do a full physical assessment of the chassis. This includes:
- Inspecting the enclosure for dents, cracks, or structural damage
- Checking all ports and connectors for physical integrity and debris
- Deep-cleaning the exterior, vents, and keyboard (where applicable)
- Verifying that all buttons, switches, and mechanical components function correctly
A Mac can pass every software test and still feel worn out. We make sure it doesn't.
2. Internal Hardware and Components
We open every machine and inspect what's inside:
- Power supply testing under load
- Motherboard visual inspection for corrosion, burn marks, or failed capacitors
- Cooling system check: fans are tested for noise, RPM accuracy, and airflow
- Interior cleaning to remove dust buildup that causes thermal throttling
Dust is one of the most common causes of performance degradation in older Macs. We clear it out completely.
3. Processor and Memory
This is where we stress the machine:
- CPU stress tests run at sustained load to confirm stable performance and proper thermal management
- RAM is tested with full memory diagnostics to identify any failing or unstable modules
- We verify that the processor is running at its rated clock speeds without throttling
A Mac that passes a quick boot test can still fail under real workloads. We test under real workloads.
4. Storage and Data Integrity
Every drive is evaluated before the machine ships:
- SSD health is checked using S.M.A.R.T. diagnostics and read/write benchmarks
- We verify there are no bad sectors or failing blocks
- All drives are securely wiped and formatted clean — no previous user data, ever
- Storage performance is confirmed to match the spec for that model
5. Graphics and Display
For machines with discrete GPUs or external display outputs:
- GPU benchmarks confirm graphics performance is within expected range for the model
- All video outputs (HDMI, Thunderbolt, DisplayPort) are tested for signal stability
- Display panels (on MacBooks) are checked for dead pixels, backlight bleed, and color accuracy
6. Software and Connectivity
The final stage before a machine is cleared:
- A fresh, clean installation of the latest compatible macOS is applied
- Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are tested for connectivity and signal strength
- All system firmware is updated to the latest available version
- A full system report is run to confirm no hardware flags or errors
The Grading System
After inspection, every Mac is assigned a condition grade based on cosmetic appearance. Performance is not graded — every machine we sell must pass the full 50-point inspection regardless of grade.
- Grade A: Minimal to no visible wear. Looks close to new.
- Grade B: Light cosmetic marks visible under close inspection. Fully functional.
- Grade C: Noticeable cosmetic wear. Performs identically to Grade A.
We're honest about cosmetic condition because we'd rather set accurate expectations than deal with a disappointed customer. The grade is on the listing. What you see is what you get.
The Warranty
Every Mac we sell comes with a 1-year warranty. If something fails due to a hardware defect within that period, we handle it. No runaround, no fine print designed to exclude legitimate claims.
