Is It Safe to Buy a Used Mac? A 10-Point Checklist for 2026

by Ray Harji 07 Oct 2026

Quick answer

Yes, buying a used or refurbished Mac is safe if the seller has tested it, removed Activation Lock and any company MDM profile, tells you the battery health, and gives you at least a 1-year warranty and a return window. The risk is almost entirely in private sales with no testing, no warranty and no returns. Use the 10-point checklist below on any Mac, from any seller.

We have sold refurbished and used Macs from our shop in Hollywood for 15 years. The Macs themselves are very reliable: Apple silicon chips do not wear out, and a desktop like a Mac mini or Mac Studio has no battery, screen or keyboard to wear out at all. When buyers get burned, it is almost always because of the seller, not the Mac. Here is how to tell the difference.

The 10-point checklist for buying a used Mac

  1. Activation Lock is off. The Mac must be signed out of the previous owner's iCloud and Find My. A locked Mac cannot be set up. Ask the seller to show the Mac at the setup screen, or check that "Find My Mac" is off.
  2. No company MDM profile. Look in System Settings → General → Device Management. If a company profile is listed, the company can lock or wipe the Mac remotely. Walk away unless the seller removes it.
  3. The exact configuration matches the listing. Apple menu → About This Mac shows the chip, memory and storage. Memory (RAM) can never be upgraded on Apple silicon Macs, so check it.
  4. Battery health (MacBooks). System Settings → Battery → Battery Health. Over 80% maximum capacity is healthy; also note the cycle count.
  5. The display. Look for dead pixels, pressure marks, and worn anti-reflective coating, which shows up as blotches on a dark screen.
  6. Keyboard and trackpad. Type every key and click across the whole trackpad.
  7. Every port, the camera, the speakers and the microphones.
  8. Storage health. The drive should report the full advertised capacity and no errors.
  9. A warranty of at least one year. In writing, from the seller.
  10. A return window. So you can test it at home with your own apps.

Where the risk really is

Where you buy Tested? Warranty Returns Main risk
Apple Certified Refurbished Yes 1 year 14 days Only recent models; stock changes daily
Independent refurbisher (like MacPro-LA) Yes Varies: ours is 1 year Varies: ours is 30 days, free Choose one with a real warranty and reviews
Marketplace (Back Market) By each seller 1 year 30 days Quality varies by seller
Private sale (Facebook, Craigslist, OfferUp) No None None Activation Lock, MDM, hidden faults, scams

Policies checked October 2026. Always confirm the warranty and return terms on the listing you buy from.

How MacPro-LA makes it safe

  • Tested by Certified Apple Technicians: Activation Lock and MDM cleared, every port, storage and thermals checked.
  • Battery health guaranteed by grade: New 100% (0 cycles), Open Box 95% and up, Grade A 80% to 95%, Grade B 80% and up.
  • 1-year warranty and 30-day free returns on every Mac.
  • Free shipping, with same-day shipping on orders paid by 1pm Pacific.
  • Pick up in Hollywood, ready in about 4 hours. Paying online holds the Mac for you; you pay at the counter with the same card and a photo ID in the same name, so no one else can collect it.
  • 15 years in Hollywood, rated 4.8 from 3,500+ reviews.

Red flags that mean walk away

  • The seller will not show the Mac powered on, or "forgot" the iCloud password.
  • A company name appears in Device Management.
  • The price is far below every other seller. Clone websites copying real stores use this trick, so check the store's address and reviews on Google Maps.
  • Payment only by gift card, wire transfer or crypto.
  • No warranty and no returns.

Common questions

Is it safe to buy a Mac that is not new?

Yes, if you buy from a seller that tests the Mac, removes Activation Lock and any company management (MDM) profile, states the battery health, and gives at least a 1-year warranty and a return window. The real risk comes from private sales with no testing, no warranty and no returns.

What is the biggest risk when buying a Mac from a previous owner?

Activation Lock. If the previous owner is still signed in to iCloud and Find My, the Mac cannot be set up and is effectively useless. Always confirm the Mac is signed out of iCloud before you pay.

What battery health is acceptable on a MacBook?

Anything above 80% maximum capacity is healthy. At MacPro-LA, open-box MacBooks have 95% or more, Grade A has 80% to 95%, and Grade B has 80% or more. You can check it in System Settings → Battery → Battery Health.

What is MDM and why does it matter?

MDM (mobile device management) is a company control profile. A Mac still enrolled in a company's MDM can be locked or wiped remotely by that company. A good seller checks and removes it before sale.

How long should the warranty be?

At least one year. Apple, Back Market and MacPro-LA all give one year on the Macs they sell. A private seller usually gives none.

Is a Mac from Apple's outlet safer than one from an independent store?

Both are safe if the seller tests the Mac and backs it with a 1-year warranty. Apple's outlet sells only recent models and stock changes daily; independent stores like MacPro-LA also carry earlier models that Apple no longer sells.
