5 Things to Check Before Buying a Used Mac — Don't Get Scammed

by Ray Harji 21 May 2026

Quick answer

From MacPro-LA — LA's highest-rated Apple reseller. 15 years in Hollywood, 2,800+ five-star reviews, Certified Apple Refurbisher. Honest, real-world guidance from a team that inspects every device in person. Read on for what we've learned and how to apply it.

Protect Yourself: The Essential Used Mac Buyer's Checklist

Buying a used Mac can save you serious money — but it can also be a nightmare if you don't know what to look for. I'm Ray Harji, and after 15 years running MacPro-LA, I've seen every scam in the book. Here are the 5 things you absolutely must check before handing over your money.

1. Check for MDM (Mobile Device Management) Locks

This is the #1 scam in used Macs. MDM-locked machines were originally owned by a business or school. Even after a factory reset, the MDM profile will re-engage and lock you out. Always go to System Settings > General > Profiles to check. At MacPro-LA, we verify every single Mac is MDM-free before it hits our shelves.

2. Verify iCloud Activation Lock Status

If Find My Mac is still enabled with the previous owner's Apple ID, you could end up with an expensive paperweight. Make sure the seller signs out of iCloud completely and you can set up the Mac with your own account. We handle this verification as part of our 35-point inspection process.

3. Test Battery Health

Go to System Settings > Battery and check the battery condition. A Mac with a degraded battery will need a costly replacement. For laptops like a MacBook Air or MacBook Pro, battery health is critical to the value.

4. Run Diagnostics on All Ports and Components

Test every USB-C/Thunderbolt port, the speakers, microphone, camera, keyboard, and trackpad. Dead ports are expensive to fix and often indicate liquid damage. Check the display for dead pixels and uneven backlighting too.

5. Verify the Specs Match the Listing

Click the Apple menu > About This Mac to confirm the processor, RAM, and storage match what's advertised. Scammers sometimes swap cheaper components or misrepresent the configuration.

The Easier Way: Buy Certified Refurbished

Don't want to worry about any of this? Browse MacPro-LA's certified refurbished Macs — every machine passes our comprehensive 35-point inspection so you don't have to play detective. Same-day pickup available across Los Angeles, or we'll deliver to your door.
